<image:caption>“What do you want to be when you grow up?" I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was ten years old. Growing up homeschooled in a rural community, in an era before the internet, and without even a television in the house, I used to travel 10 miles by bicycle to the nearest library where I started with authors whose last names began with A and worked my way to Z. When I needed a break from books, I read the library's magazines—everything from Life, Time, and Newsweek, to Field and Stream, Car and Driver, GQ, and Cosmopolitan …</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Love and Acceptance From Family Lifts Shame with Daryl Potter</image:title>
<image:caption>This week on the podcast, I’m joined by author Daryl Potter, whose writing—both fiction and non-fiction—flows deeply from his own life story. In his latest book, Something More: Living Well in a Broken World, Daryl shares how God met him in a profound way, bringing unexpected healing to places he didn’t even realize were broken. Although Daryl grew up in the church, the neglect and emotional abuse he experienced at home left him carrying a heavy burden of shame. It wasn’t until the unconditional love of an aunt broke through those walls that Daryl began to experience freedom and the tender healing of God’s timing. This conversation is a powerful reminder that none of us are beyond the reach of God’s love, and that healing often comes through the kindness and care of others. Listen now to hear Daryl’s story of brokenness, grace, and hope.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On this episode of the Nacho Kids Podcast, Lori welcomes Daryl Potter, a Canadian banker and published author, for a conversation that takes us far beyond the typical stepfamily story. Daryl isn’t a member of a blended family himself, but his experience raising a child with two extremely rare medical conditions has given him a unique perspective on navigating “irregular” family dynamics and finding beauty in unexpected places. Daryl opens up about his 28-year marriage, the cultural mosaic of his household, and the challenges and profound blessings of caring for his daughter, who is the only person in the world with her combination of diagnoses. He shares how his family has had to rewrite the script on everything from holidays to family vacations, and how his son has learned life skills and empathy far beyond his years. Throughout the episode, Daryl and Lori delve into themes of grief, acceptance, reframing success, and the importance of not comparing pain, reminding us that everyone’s journey holds its own weight, no matter how “broken” it may appear from the outside. Daryl’s story is a powerful reminder that, whether you’re in a stepfamily or not, every family must find its own version of normal and discover joy, purpose, and connection along the way. Learn why storytelling (even in banking!) is a crucial leadership skill, and how creating narrative can move people and get results in ways statistics never will. Episode Resources & Action Steps: Resources Mentioned in the Episode Darrell Potter’s Website - darrellpotter.com - Find links to all of Darrell’s books—fiction and nonfiction—including “Something More: Living Well in a Broken World,” and details about his writing and background. Books by Darrell Potter Something More: Living Well in a Broken World – A journey through Ecclesiastes, blending memoir and commentary. Even the Monsters – A memoir-commentary hybrid exploring the book of Job through personal experience. Action Steps for Listeners Reflect on Your Storytelling Approach: Try applying narrative techniques in your business presentations, emails, or personal communications. As Darrell and Tim discussed, storytelling isn’t just for writers—it’s a powerful tool for leaders and professionals in any field. Engage with Difficult Biblical Texts or Philosophical Writings: Choose a challenging work, such as Job or Ecclesiastes, and read it alongside a commentary or memoir (like Darrell’s books) to deepen your understanding and relate ancient wisdom to your own experience. Reevaluate Expectations for Fulfillment and Happiness: Spend time journaling or discussing with a friend or mentor where you may have placed unrealistic expectations—whether in career, relationships, or faith. Ask yourself: “Where do I seek ultimate fulfillment, and how would my outlook change if I embraced the lessons of Ecclesiastes or Job?” Key Lessons: Happiness Isn’t Found in Achievement or Possessions: Daryl points out that no amount of career success, possessions, or even relationships can provide lasting fulfillment. The world is intentionally designed so that achievements and gains quickly lose their shine, pushing us to seek deeper meaning beyond material pursuits. The Power of Story in Work and Life: Both in his career as a banker and as a writer, Daryl emphasized the transformative power of storytelling. Whether you’re crafting a business case or sharing personal experiences, narratives connect, persuade, and inspire in ways numbers alone cannot. Faith and Suffering Are Not Transactional: Daryl’s personal journey, especially through his daughter’s medical struggles, led him to realize that faith doesn’t guarantee a pain-free or ‘successful’ life. Instead, the biblical stories of Job and Ecclesiastes teach us how to live well in a broken world, rather than expect constant miracles or perfect outcomes. Embrace the Mystery and Complexity of Life: Through his exploration of Ecclesiastes, Daryl encourages listeners to accept life’s transience and unpredictability—likening it to “breath”: beautiful, fleeting, and outside our ultimate control. Recognizing this can foster gratitude, humility, and a deeper trust in God’s bigger picture. You’re Not Alone in Struggle—There’s Hope and Help: Daryl reminds anyone dealing with grief, special needs, or life’s setbacks that they are not alone. Countless others have walked similar paths, and both ancient wisdom and modern resources are available to guide and encourage you. Stay with your story, seek support, and trust that meaning and hope can be found on the journey. <image:title>Home - EPISODE 189: When One Child Needs 24/7 Care… How Do You Love Them Both?</image:title>
<image:caption>Parenting is never perfectly balanced, and sometimes it is not even close. In this heart-opening conversation, I sit down with Daryl Potter, a dad and author who raised two kids on very different paths: one with complex medical needs and one who still needed his own place in the spotlight. You will hear how his family navigated daily medical crises and palliative care while keeping his son seen, secure, and deeply loved. We talk about simple habits that change everything. Schedule real one-on-one time. Take your kids on date nights even when life feels chaotic. Keep small promises that matter, like a nightly thirty-minute game session even if video games are not your thing. These tiny rituals add up to a confident, connected child who knows they are special on their own. When family support fell through, Daryl and his wife built a chosen family and created a new kind of vacation rhythm so each parent could rest while their daughter received the care she needed. Their story models kindness, commitment, flexibility, and courage for kids and adults alike. Press play for perspective and practical steps you can use tonight. Daryl doesn’t have adopted or fostered children but he does have a miraculous daughter with complex medical needs and another biological son. Whether your kids are biological, adopted, or fostered, there are universal truths in parenting and along with it circumstances which take us to the brink of our capacityphysical, emotional, mental and even spiritual. In this episode specifically we are looking at the unique challenges of raising kids with complex medical needs. Daryl shares his personal experiences, insights, and advice for you if youre in the trenches of that right now. This may be a calling on your life to adopt or foster children with complex needs or this is a circumstance out of your control in your biological children. Whatever the case may be, the grueling long nights in hospitals, the panic, the fear, the weight of it all can wear you down. This is why Daryl shares how mindfulness as found in Ecclesiastes is so powerful and a Biblical tool for managing it. Here are a few key takeaways: Navigating parenting with complex needs requires emotional resilience. Communication is key in marriage, especially during challenging times. Personal growth often comes from facing unexpected parenting challenges. Building a support network is crucial for families dealing with special needs. It's important to maintain perspective in difficult situations. Mindfulness can help parents enjoy the present moment. Parents should learn to express their emotions, including vulnerability. Children can be affected by the caregiving dynamics in the family. It's essential to listen to children's feelings and experiences. Finding joy in small moments can help alleviate stress. Connect more with Daryl on his website or social media. You can also check out his books! He recommends your local library but you can also purchase wherever books are sold. The books he explicitly mentions are: Something More: Living Well in a Broken World and Even the Monsters. <image:title>Home - Living Well in a Broken World: What Job and Ecclesiastes Teach About Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>Life in a broken world is full of suffering, grief, and unanswered questions. But what if God has more to teach us in the middle of the pain than in the absence of it? In this episode of the Freed to Lead Podcast, I sit down with author and banker Daryl Potter, who has walked through decades of personal loss while raising a daughter with severe health challenges and supporting his family through unimaginable trials. His story is raw, real, and deeply rooted in Scripture. Together, we explore how the books of Job and Ecclesiastes reveal God’s heart, even when life feels unfair, and how hope can be found in places we least expect it. If you’ve ever wrestled with questions like “Why does God allow suffering?” or “How do I keep faith when life hurts?” — this conversation will remind you that God is still good, still sovereign, and still with you.</image:caption>

Many of the 800+ SFN Mentor Fathers, who are raising kids with special needs, have said: “I wish there was something like this when we first received our child’s diagnosis. I felt so isolated. There was no one within my family, at work, at church or within my friend group who understood or could relate to what I was going through.” SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs. The SFN Mentor Fathers do NOT offer legal or medical advice, that is what lawyers and doctors do. They simply share their experiences and how they have made the most of challenging situations.
